BOTANICAL GARDEN STORY SLAM
Are you a storyteller? Do you have a story you would like to share? Ten people will have a chance to tell their story at the Botanical Garden Story Slam on the Ojos y Manos: Eyes and Hands amphitheater stage.
Send in your Interest Form to be considered for a spot in our first ever Botanical Garden Story Slam, Saturday, October 8th at 1p.m. Prizes awarded for the best story!
What’s a Story Slam? A story slam is a very short and true story about the storyteller. Slams are typically 5 minutes long or rather short. Shorter stories mean quickly connecting the audience to your story through feeling, creativity and meaning. Still not sure, check out The Moth website or podcast for inspiration.

Special prizes for winners plus the winning team will be immortalized forever on the Big Read Trivia Bowl trophy displayed in the Main Library and invited back next year to defend their title.
COMMUNITY ART SHOW
The City of Santa Fe celebrates There There by Tommy Orange. Santa Fe Public Library invites the community to submit their artwork based on the themes of There There or the alternate youth selections, We are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, Fry Bread by Kevin Noble, Healer of the Water Monster by Brian Young, Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley, and The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline.
All entries will be exhibited at the Santa Fe Public Library gallery spaces. Some art submitted may be used to promote NEA Big Read programs.
Samantha Tracy and Bess Murphy from Coe Center for the Arts will select prize winning works of art that best reflect the themes of the Big Read titles. Each age group will have first, second, and third place winners, as well as honorable mentions. Age groups are 0-4, 5-8, 9-12, 13-17, 18+
Participants must submit their entry and images of their work by Friday, November 4th, 2022.
There is a maximum of two entries per participant; a form for each entry is required.
Artists may drop off art submissions to any of the Santa Fe Public Library branches during the months of September and October, 2022.
Participants’ submission(s) may utilize any form of visual art media.
Each work submitted for the NEA Big Read Art Show must meet the following requirements: Represent the themes of the novel, There There by Tommy Orange or the alternate youth selections , We are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom, Fry Bread by Kevin Noble, Healer of the Water Monster by Brian Young, Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley, and The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline. POETRY CONTEST
The Santa Fe Public Library is hosting a poetry contest for teens (ages 13-18) and adults (ages 19+). Please submit an original poem in any poetic style that is inspired by our NEA Big Read selection, There There by Tommy Orange. Poets must be at least 13 years of age. One submission per poet. Your submission must be one page and no longer than 30 lines. Fantastic local gift certificates for winning poems and recognition from award winning poets!
The deadline for submissions is by Friday, November 4th, 2022. Email your submission to [email protected] with your full name, phone number, and age category (teen or adult). Winners will be notified by end of November.

ESSAY CONTEST
The Santa Fe Public Library is hosting an essay contest for two age categories, teens (ages 13-18) and adults (ages 19+). In 700 words or less respond to the following prompt: There There by Tommy Orange details historical narratives from a variety of perspectives. How do you approach your own communities’ historical narratives to ensure a deeper understanding of the stories presented to us? Essays may draw upon the book, historical examples, or personal experience. One submission per author. Fantastic local gift certificates for winning essays!
